Happy Muslim Women's Day! In this current political climate where Islamophobia is rampant and anti-Muslim hate crimes are at an all time high since 9/11, we need to celebrate the pioneering women that have blown the public away by being unapologetically Muslim.
Amani Al-Khatahtbeh from Muslim Girl, is collaborating with many media outlets to officially mark March 27th as Muslim Women's Day. In the words of Amani, "it's a time to hear from a community that's often talked about but rarely given the chance to speak." HuffPost Women, Refinery29, Teen Vogue, Brit, amongst other outlets have joined the movement by celebrating the movement's mission of providing a platform for Muslim women's voices and stories to be heard. This day falls nicely in line with Women's History Month.
All too often, stories about Muslims, and particularly Muslim women, proliferate the internet and the media without being able to hear their experiences directly from them. This is our chance to disrupt the misconstrued narrative about Muslims and start highlighting real Muslim women by providing them the space to shed light on their own realities complexities.
How can you participate you ask?
Do your part by keeping the hashtag campaign going (#MuslimWomensDay) by speaking out against the hateful backlash it has caused. The negative reactions it garnered from many is only a testament to how important it is for our voices to be heard!
